Darron's Hip Hop Class = Pure Entertainment

Every once in awhile I pull up the 24-hour Fitness group exercise class schedule while I'm at work, just to see if there are any new changes and to help plan my workout week. Last Monday I pulled it up, and I was shocked and overjoyed to find out that Darron was back on the schedule teaching hip hop! He's an African American guy (yes, that does make you better at hip hip, and yes, you can think I'm racist if you want). :) But seriously, I was so excited! I think I've blogged about his hip hop classes before. They're so fun, he's hilarious, and you get a totally good workout to boot. About a year ago he stopped teaching and I didn't know why. Some girl took his place, and Darron never came back. I tried her class out once and it was soooo not any comparison to Darron's. I never went back.

So of course on Wednesday I was there at hip hop, and I was so excited to see Darron there! (You never know - the schedule could have been wrong, something could have changed...) I wasn't sure if he'd remember me (he used to call me "New Orleans" - i.e. yell it out in the middle of class). Sure enough he did - he started yelling out "Nurse Betty" or something like that. I didn't think he meant me, but then I saw that he was looking at me. And then he started yelling out "Louisiana." So yeah, I've left an impression. Probably with my white girl moves, or the fact that I used to go all the time when he taught. Either way, it's funny to have him call out your nickname during class.

This class is entertaining not just because you're having fun dancing, but because you get to see all the people around you bust-a-move. It's cool to watch talented people, but mostly entertaining to watch those crazy dancers with the spastic white-girl moves. I'll admit that people could probably laugh when watching me, but I'd like to hope I don't look like some of the people in there. It seriously is funny. I don't know how Darron doesn't laugh more than he does. Just watching other people I can't help it. I know that sounds sooo rude! Again, I don't think I'm a super talented dancer. It's just that when you've got a room full of people giving it their all, you're bound to see some spastic and funny moves. I really think people should consider trading in their movie night for a night watching hip hop at 24 - you won't be disappointed.

And I can't leave out the fact that some people have no shame. I happened to be right behind a group of crazy, immature girls (I know that used to be me, but not like this I swear)! They were freestyling and doing these crazy butt-shake moves, bending all the way over to the ground and shaking their butts (to the point that their butt cheeks were practically hanging out of their shorts), pulling up their shirts so they were more like a sports bra, etc. I know hip hop is supposed to be fun, but are you supposed to be dancing like you're seducing someone? It was so over-the-top. I don't think they realized how they were coming across. I mean, save it for the clubs (although first of all they're probably not old enough, and secondly I wouldn't recommend it there, either - I'm sure these were fairly innocent LDS girls, but these moves would totally give a guy the wrong impression). What a sexualized society we live in - scary!

Anyways, it was a fun class. I was a little rusty but did okay. It was kind of embarassing because he had people dance in small groups in front of everyeone else (groups of 5-7 people). Crazy! At least I don't know anyone there...

So let's hope Darron stays around and I can keep having fun dancing!
