Ever since my recent trips to Hawaii and New York City I've had a newfound appreciation of food, especially ethnic/cultural foods and good restaurants. It's a stark contrast to the Katie of old - I'd plan a vacation and the one area I'd really try to save money in was food. We'd bring along breakfast foods, eat cheap fast food, etc. But now I've realized that a significant part of a vacation is enjoying the local food. What better way can you really experience the culture of an area?
I haven't posted pictures from my NYC trip yet, but tons of the pictures are of food. I had to remember all of the amazing dishes and treats I had! It helped that I had tons of recommendations of where to eat. Eating was really a big highlight of the trip.
But now my love of food has extended beyond the vacation boundary. Since I've been home from NYC we've tried to eat at a few new restaurants (one wasn't open yet, but we did eat at the other). And we've eaten at Spoon Me twice (it's just like Pinkberry, and we tend to call it Pinkberry since Spoon Me is such a weird name). It's so fun to try new places, especially when they turn out to be good. The new place we tried was L&L Hawaiin Barbecue - it seemed like really authentic Hawaiian food, and they have musubi! I love that stuff! Oh, and we might make another trip to Pinkberry (aka Spoon Me) tonight. I love it!
And besides eating out, I love finding great new recipes. At work we have a cultural diversity website, and recently (work has been a little slow lately...) I checked it out and found some recipes for Korean food (beef bulgogi and seasoned potatoes). I swear when I'm a stay-at-home mom I'll be able to spend more time trying out new recipes, and I'm excited for that.
So yeah, I'm really enjoying food lately. I'm thinking about starting a food blog where I can talk about new places we eat (that won't be super often since we do still have a budget), good recipes I find, and even suggestions from other people of where to eat. For now these are the next places I want to try out:
1) The Pie (a pizza place in Salt Lake that's nationally ranked)
2) Five Guys Burger and Fries (I hear they have the best fries ever)
3) Spark (a lounge here in Provo on University Ave that supposedly has great appetizers)
4) I'm on a search to find a chinese food place with pork soup dumplings (I haven't put any effort into this one yet, but ever since the dumplings in NYC I've been wanting more!)

have you tried red mango? I heard that pinkberry is actually modeled off of red mango which started in Korea. As for five guys, I like their burgers almost as much as in-n-out and their fries better, but I've decided that the best fries (and greesiest) are at iceberg or burger king. Also there're a couple great places in slc you should try like blue plate diner. It's cheap and even their meatloaf tastes amazing.
Ok, Katie, I am coming to Provo in June to bring Alex to the MTC. I like to try new places, too. We will not be there long, but where are the places we should not miss? I think Spoon Me should be on the list. Alex went there and it looks so cute. What else do you recommend?
