So we have this girl at work right now who has a staph infection. With all the hype lately, it has a lot of people at work worried. But not the girl! She shares clothes with other clients, isn't good about washing her hands, etc. So as the nurse, I had to put my foot down!
No other tactics had worked, so on Wednesday I utilized the scare tactic. I didn't want to embarrass the girl (plus I can't tell other patients she has staph since that breaches confidentiality), so I did a group for the whole Girls Unit on hygiene in general. I printed off all these scary, gross pictures of staph infections, eye infections, lice, and a horrible cold sore. I love it! I passed around these graphic, colorful pictures during the group and got the response I was looking for. The girls were good, too - they seemed to pay attention and asked questions.
The next day, we thought we caught our "staph girl" sharing clothes again, but it turned out it was a misunderstanding. Actually, the girls were reclaiming their own clothes and not sharing anymore. It's nice to see that my group had an impact.
Just one more day in the life of "Nurse Katie." Saving the world, one "hygiene group" at a time!

Way to scare the crap out of your clients. Any bets on how long that will last? :)
